Review: Chihuahua Confidential by Waverly Curtis

Description (from cover):

‘If I say so myself, I am muy foxy!’
‘When novice P.I. Geri Sullivan first heard her adopted Chihuahua talk, she thought she’d gone barking mad. But it turns out Pepe is a savvy sleuth–and if he has his way, he’ll soon be a bone-a-fido celebrity, too, as Pepe and Geri are Hollywood-bound to star in the reality show Dancing With Dogs. So far, so bueno.
Then Nigel St. Nigel, the judge everyone loves to hate, becomes the judge someone wanted dead. Pepe and Geri are hot on a killer’s heels but between perfecting the paso doble and protecting Pepe’s Pomeranian lady love, both have their paws full. If Pepe’s new status as a Beverly Hills Chihuahua goes to his head, it may be the last waltz for Geri’s crime-biting compadre…’

My thoughts:

By now, I am sure most of you guys already know that I own a chihuahua. I love their feisty attitude and Pepe’s character in this novel is a true depiction of how chihuahuas act and think. The author did a fantastic job of creating Pepe’s character and making him true to the chihuahua breed. He is a feisty, little dog and nothing gets in his way. I love Chihuahuas and I absolutely love reading books about them, especially cozy mysteries.

I did have a couple of issues with this book. At times, it really made me sad what happened to the dogs and I had a hard time reading a couple of scenes because I am a dog lover. There were some scenes I could have done completely without, but I understand that not every reader is as sensitive as I am about dogs. The dancing reality show was a complete knockoff and it was a little corny, but Pepe’s character and his antics made this one a light and fun book to read. The mystery wasn’t complicated, but it wasn’t an easy one to figure out. I was actually surprised with who the murderer was and the motive in this one.

I think this was a cute read and I know I will read the next installment in this series, just for the chihuahua factor. By no means the best cozy series, but it will do the trick. Just try to keep in mind that you might have some issues reading this book if you are sensitive to animals and situations dealing with injured animals. I had a really hard time getting over that and it kind of made the book less exciting for me. Just something to keep in mind. Pepe’s character will make you laugh, I guarantee it.
